3 months!

I can't believe how fast this boy is growing! Last week I weighed him when we were in for the second half of his immunizations (I spread out his immunizations - doing 1/2 during his well child visit, then do the other 1/2 the following month). Benson is wearing 6-9 month clothing and size 2 diapers. He loves to smile and always seems to have bubbles and drool on his lips and chin… and shirt… Carly didn't drool so this is new for us. He hates tummy time and truth be told this baby is already crawling - when he's screaming on his tummy.... Loves to be on his back with toys hanging over - he touches his toys - already working on that hand-eye coordination :) He also likes to have his tummy blown on, likes to sit on Carly's head and kick her in the tummy, and loves to be sung to and smiled at. He smiles at himself in the mirror. His favorite way to be held is facing outward and sitting on my hip. This makes for tired arms on really fussy days. I must admit I love those gummy smiles, so I'm ok with this baby stage for just a bit longer.

We went to a friend's birthday party. Carly was dancing around (no, there wasn't any music….). She also kept putting on princess shoes to walk around the house.

Carly is always trying to sit on or climb on Benson. Kind of weird, but also pretty hilarious. She loves to be wherever he is - on the floor, in the bouncer chair, under the play mat, etc.

Did I mention how Carly's new favorite saying is "oh man!" Today we were playing with friends at our house and all the sudden Benson was crying from his cradle and she said "oh man!" Love this girl. The  other day I bathed Benson & Carly at the same time. Carly was being such a great little helper - washing Benson's head with the washcloth. It was very cute & lots of fun.

December 2013 Part 1

Oh man I feel like time is just cruising by. It's exciting because I'm anxious for Benson to get a little older and be more consistent with his good sleeping nights. At the same time, I feel like he's growing way too fast. I still can't believe he's in 6 month clothes and some of those outfits are already seeming a little small on him… So not use to this crazy growing! I was sure Benson would be in the crazy percentiles at his 2 month appt but he's actually in the 50th % for weight. I guess it's just a big change for me only having Carly to compare him to. Benson has really good days/nights and really awful days/nights. I took him off his acid reflux medication last week because I wasn't sure if it was helping. And if it wasn't making a difference, it didn't really make sense to give it to him. I'm really hoping time will help him to be more comfortable. Benson has been having more smiley times. I love his little noises and his gummy smiles. Lately I've been singing a lot of Christmas songs and it just melts my heart that he will smile when I sing to him :)

Carly is getting smarter and smarter each week. Lately she likes to repeat the last word of everything I say to her. And I talk to her a lot about what we're doing, etc. so I think she's learning lots of new words. My favorites are words with "s" like "house" "toast" "toys"…. She cracks me up. There are a lot of words she's determined to say her way - like milk she says "neh". I have to teach Morgan these variations so that he knows what she's asking for. Carly went potty on the toilet recently, but it hasn't happened consistently or very often for that matter. Carly loves to climb and be a little dangerous. Overall she's a pretty good listener. Whenever we're walking somewhere she either has to hold my hand or the stroller. Now she's always determined to hold onto the stroller (even when Daddy's there to hold her hand). She has a great memory. One time I asked her to bring me the wipes (when I was getting ready to put Benson in his bath). Now every time I'm getting ready to put Benson in the bath, she says "wise" and gets the wipes for Benson. She also likes to throw away her own diaper. This started during a bath time - I asked her to put her diaper in the garbage and now she expects to do it each time. She's proving more and more to be a great helper.

One of Carly's favorite things to say is "eyes" and point at her eyes, Benson's eyes, etc.

We made gingerbread houses with our friends yesterday. Carly was clearly more excited about eating the treats than decorating the house. Well I guess the house making was more for me than for her anyway. She sure had fun eating lots of treats. She vocalized her approval by saying "num num num" as she ate :)
Autumn is a pro because she decorates sugar cookies a lot with her mama.
 Just one more….
Ava had better things to do than decorate a house. She decided to run rampant throughout the house. She kept herself occupied.

I need to get Carly used to holding her little brother. Whenever she decides she's done holding him, she just lets go and squirms out from under him…. But at least this time, she held him a little longer and smiled :)

When I undressed Benson for these next pics Carly was giggling and saying "toes" over and over. I guess it's funny when the baby is naked. She also started pulling at her shirt. Apparently she's already wanting to copy her brother.

Carly had better things to do than color some Christmas cards. Possible blackmail pic for the future?

Christmas Traditions

Thanks Anna for the suggestion to post about my Christmas traditions!

For as long as I can remember, my siblings and I always looked forward to Christmas. We would start our Christmas lists early in anticipation of the Christmas season and basically have Christmas list parties. These "parties" would usually take place in my room, each of us wrapped up in blankets because it was freezing and we would day dream about all the cool stuff we wanted for Christmas. I do recall one year asking for a horse for Christmas. In my mind, it made perfect sense. It could live in our small backyard and I could ride it to school. Genius. My mom wouldn't have to drive me anywhere ever again.

We had an advent calendar we would take turns doing each day. The kind where you take a mini-ornament out of the pocket and pin it on the felt christmas tree. We also had certain scriptures we would read each night about the Savior. One year we had some friends give us a candle and verses to read each night. It was fun because we would light the candle, read the verses, then blow it out. Seems pretty simple, but for kids - we had a great time with it and really looked forward to it.

As soon as we got our Christmas decorations out (usually not too long after Thanksgiving), we would do "good deeds" or service for each other. One of our Christmas decorations and traditions was a little wooden manger with a little baby Jesus. Every time we did a good deed, we got to put a piece of hay in the manger. We needed to do these good deeds so that the manger would be ready for baby Jesus come Christmas day.

Leading up to Christmas, we would do the 12 days of Christmas to other families. This became more and more fun and exciting the older we got. I believe it started out as us just leaving it on the door step and later it became more like ding-dong-ditching. We would hold a family discussion to decide what families we would do this for each year. One year, we did this for my best friend Ashley. Her parents (mostly her Dad) were anxious to find out who was doing this for them. Each night got harder and harder. My older brother, Caleb & I would dress in dark/comfortable clothes to complete the task. One night we almost got caught - her Dad opened the door and we hurried to hide under the stairs that led to the front door. But he came out and headed right toward us. We ended up sprinting down the street and through the dark park to get away. He never caught us. It's possible that I almost peed my pants one of these nights. It was pretty intense.

We always got our Christmas tree from one of those places where you cut it down yourself. My dad would load up the essentials - saw, rope, tarp, etc. and we would be on our way. We had a family vote to decide which tree to get. Once decided, we each had a turn to help cut down the tree. This usually meant we were just holding right below my dad's hand on the saw as he did the work, but as we got older, obviously we were able to do more. We would usually decorate the tree that night. Youngest to oldest, we would each take an ornament and put them on the tree. Our ornaments were anything from something one of us had made in primary (a picture of us or a popcorn necklace) to what you might consider a christmas ornament (santa clause, reindeer, etc.). I don't think there were many ornaments that "went together" - they were all pretty unique and all are special to our family.

Within the week of Christmas, my mom would bake. She'd usually make caramels, fudge and some other delicious cookies and treats. She would put together an assortment of treats on plates and we would carol to a butt-load of people. I mean it. We would go to all the families that my parents home taught & visit taught and each kid in my family would get to pick a friend we could go to. It took forever, but it was super fun. The night usually ended with hot chocolate because we would be freezing.

On Christmas Eve, we always re-inacted the nativity story. We each had a role, we would dress up and then film it. This involved reading the story from the scriptures and acting out the story as the verses were read. This also included singing hymns that went along with the story in between verses. My mom would play the piano, and we would all stand around and sing. I was usually Mary, my brother Caleb was Joseph and the youngest kid was baby Jesus. Most of us (as Mary, Joseph and shepherds). As the years went on, my sister Rachel would be Mary and I would be the angel. I usually dressed myself in a white sheet.

Christmas Eve was also pizza night. I think mainly because there was so much going on that evening, and of course we all loved having pizza.

Then we would lay out our stockings somewhere in the room where the tree was. This may seem kind of strange because normally you picture stockings hanging above the fireplace. However, in our house, Santa brings gifts that are unwrapped. So where we would put our stocking would be where Santa would leave our present/s too. Next we put out a plate of cookies & cup of milk for Santa, and a carrot for the reindeer and go to bed.

I don't know how exactly this started, but we have always loved sneaking out during the night to see what Santa brought. Of course I have to blame my older brother, since it probably started because of him :) I'm sure it started as just "I hope I wake up during the night so I can sneak out." But, it evolved to planning and preparing for the night. I'm sure that initially my parents started "traps" as a way to know when we were leaving our bedrooms, so they didn't get caught. The earliest I remember was paper grocery bags with hangers/pots & pans that were set right outside our bedroom doors. We didn't see them of course, so it would make a lot of noise when we left our bedroom during the night. These "traps" evolved as well. Some years our door knobs were tied together with string, one year butcher paper was taped to the door frames - that was a tough one to cut it without making noise. One year there was string tied to door knobs, a sleeping bag stuffed at the top of the stair case with a wig and a hidden baby monitor. The other monitor was next to my dad - so we heard him snoring. I actually thought my dad was sleeping there. The stair case was covered with butcher paper and strings. Anyway, basically every year is a very elaborate attempt to keep the kids from sneaking out to see presents. We have always loved it. Hence, why the planning would evolve as well. We began setting alarms and making sure we had flashlights. Eventually we would make sure we had things like scissors, etc.

Christmas morning we would always have to wait until 7am to go out as a family. My dad - camcorder in hand - would record us coming out youngest to oldest. We would see what Santa brought us. Then we'd eat our cereal from Santa for breakfast. Opening presents was next, youngest to oldest. And whoever was opening next had to clean up the previous person's garbage before they could open theirs. As you can imagine - this took a long time, but by the time we were done, there wasn't garbage to clean up. Lunch was always summer sausage, cheese and crackers. Dinner would be something nice like chicken, potatoes, etc. Christmas day was always laid back and we would just stay inside and hang out. I still LOVE going home for Christmas because I love all of our traditions.

Early Christmas pics

I got an early christmas present… a camera!!! Woohoo!!! So here are some of my first photos. Can you tell we're getting excited for Christmas? Also, I needed to get pics of Benson in his blessing outfit before he outgrew it completely :)

October

Man, I can't believe it's already November! October really flew by. Benson is 4 weeks old. He had an appointment last Tuesday and weighed 9 lb 2 oz, so he is growing at a healthy pace. He likes to sleep and eat, other than that it is hard for him to be content unless he's being held, bounced, or given his binky. We looked up the definition of colicky yesterday and now know that he is considered "colicky". Not that that really means anything more than he is just a fussy baby. I have started eliminating things from my diet to see if that helps. Hoping we find something that works!

He is a very noisy sleeper. This makes church a little awkward like in Sunday school & Relief Society when it's time for prayer. I'm pretty sure the whole room can hear my baby breathing. He constantly has his hands right up at his face, scratching or trying to suck on them. I'm hoping we don't have a potential thumb or finger sucker... I have been giving him his binky more frequently to try to counteract that. Hoping it works.

He was blessed this last Sunday. He decided he didn't want to wear all white, so he had a blow-out right before church (when we needed to leave). How thoughtful. We rushed to get his outfit clean and he had to wear a slightly damp blessing outfit to church. The cool thing is that his blessing outfit is the same outfit his daddy wore at his baby blessing. It was made by Morgan's Grandma Joyce. We love it.

Carly has been much better since I've been able to function and go out & about. Now that we have more of a routine, there hasn't been as much whining & crying as the first little while. Carly has started doing a lot of new things since the baby was born. She started saying 2 word phrases like "up me", "down me" and "done me". Just this week she has been trying to use words more instead of whining when she wants/needs something. Mainly because we talk her through what she should say in simple words and it's really been helping. She loves her baby brother. She loves to point his facial features like eyes, nose mouth, hair, ears. Because his hair is so soft, she likes to touch it and kind of pull on it. Yet another reason I don't feel I can leave her unattended with him lol. She loves to take his hand in her hand and do a handshake kind of thing and say "hi hi hi hi hi". It's really cute. She also likes to touch his feet and toes and do the little piggies. She also loves to give him kisses, give him his binky (unless she's trying to steal it), and likes to help brush his hair.

 First Sunday at church

Making a "marble works" type of invention. Carly was loving playing with marbles.

Playing at REI. She loved going "night night" and trying out the different camping mattresses.

We've been doing quite a bit of baking lately. Carly loves to help :)
The best of our family pictures attempted the day Benson was blessed.... Carly was in a bad mood...
